  • How would your character describe themselves before a court of their respected peers? Magic will reveal outright lies, but not subtle deceit.

I am Ava Shade of Mordentshire. Some know me as “Red”. Others that really know me, know I am honorable, steadfast, relentless & slightly mysterious. I seek truth and justice in everyday life and someday for all of Mordent. Those that defy all that is good in the world, do not deserve to be in it and I will make sure they don’t…justice will be swift.

  • What virtues, like courage, generosity, justice, or truthfulness does your character value the most? What qualities does your character despise?

Those that have courage, I admire most. My father told me long ago, “Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is in the actions you take when consumed with fear.” I strive to live my life by that and look for it in those I surround myself with.

  • What is your character’s greatest strength?

My greatest strength is that while I still live and breath, there is still hope.

  • What is your character’s greatest weakness?

My curiosity of the unknown may very well be my downfall, like a wolf, when I catch a scent of something, I can’t stop till I find it.

  • Ordinary people do not understand the world of magic and the supernatural—for them it is only myth and legend. However, your character understands the truth. Magic and the supernatural are real, and great evil exists in the world. Your character is a “point of light in the widespread darkness.” Describe how your character came to this revelation.

When I was 11 or so, my father (who was a Lamplighter as well) disappeared and left no trace behind. He was a top investigator called to duty when Gennifer Foxgrove, of the Weathermays, was reportedly mauled by a wolf in the middle of the city. He became obsessed with this case. As time went on, we saw less and less of him. Not quite a year into the case, he left after quickly eating dinner. Never said a word throughout the meal. That was the last time I saw him ever walk through the door of our home on the hill ever again. I snuck out to follow him, staying close enough so that I could only see the large frame of his outline in the distance.

He quickly lead me to the Heather House and I almost lost him a couple of times but got there just in time to see him disappear into the house. So I waited and waited across the street. He came back out and went around to the back of the manor. I went to go follow him, when something seemed to slow my movements. My vision blurred and I felt a wave of cold, dead air that stilled the blood in my veins. Just before I lost consciousness, I caught the sight and smell of what seemed like…like…walking death to me. There is no better way I can describe it.

When I came to, it was still nighttime, but there were more people outside Heather House, so I left before someone saw me. When I came home and listened to the lecture of my mother, I fell into a restless sleep. My little sister, only a baby at the time, caught a sudden fever and wouldn’t stop crying for days. He never came back. I kept going to the Heather House almost everyday after that, but saw no sign of my father.

About a month later, while crouching in the bushes of the Heather House, I noticed there were 2 amber colored lights that seemed to be “looking” at me. “Impossible!”, I thought, “I am completely hidden!”. I began to back away slowly so as not to make any noise. I backed up into a root and exclaimed when I stubbed my toe. I looked up and the lights got bigger. “It had to have heard me!” I turned and ran back down the edge of the plateau, but lost my footing again in my panic and started to fall. I shut my eyes and braced myself, but never felt the blow I knew was coming.

I opened my eyes and realized I was suspended over the edge, I glanced up and looking down at me were those 2 amber colored lights. Clutching my cape in its mouth, was the whitest wolf I have ever seen. Those lights were his eyes and yet when I looked at them again, I felt a comfort I hadn’t felt in weeks.

  • Describe your character’s family? What are your parents’ like? Do you have brothers or sisters? Which family or friends do you hold most dear?

The Shades are known as honorable people. My mother, who is always happy, joyful however prone to slightly obsess over her hair, which is as red the roses in her garden. My father, a former Lamplighter, was a moral man with an overwhelming presence, but he would give his last coin to someone in need. My little sister, slightly spoiled, is very smart and one day hopes to be a renowned scholar. D’Artanion is my companion. He is fiercely loyal, mysterious & loves lamb chops. I find it strange, however that he seems unchanged by time. He is as I remember him 18 years ago. I would protect all of them with my life.

  • Everyone has something that is important, whether it is a ring, a sword, or a memento. What is sacred to your character? Explain why it is important.

When I was little, my mother made me a necklace. With a stone of amber. It reminds me of my family. It may not be worth much to anyone else, however priceless to me.

  • Has your character ever killed someone? If so please describe what happened with as much detail as possible.

I have killed 6 men in my life. They were up to no good. The first was about 5 years ago, a strange sailor coming to port. His crew and him settled at the Cloverleaf Tavern. When I got there he had a knife to the throat of the Barkeep. He was dead before he knew it. The other was only last year. 5 strange men from the south seemed to take a special interest in the “Wolf Lady”. I was out on patrol, when they tried to accost D’Artanion and I. Though one of the men had the chance to cut my left arm badly, it was over soon after.

  • Does your character have any enemies? If so, why? What happened?

Evil must die.

  • Your character is plagued by a recurring dream/nightmare. Describe the dream.

I dream of the Heather House long ago. A man walking out. A smell of death…

  • What is your character’s greatest regret?

I was not strong enough to follow my father.

  • How do you want people to remember you after your death?

I, Ava Shade, fought for the right reasons. Righteous in my cause, and just in my actions. I upheld the truth and stayed through till the bitter end.
